Ford is teaming up with Agility Robotics to explore the way deliveries are made. Together, the companies have revealed an autonomous vehicle/robot set-up that will deliver a package all the way to your front door.

Ford says that since self-driving vehicles ‘can potentially move people and goods simultaneously, they hold great potential to make deliveries even more convenient and efficient. A ride-hailing trip could double as a delivery service, dropping off packages in between transporting passengers.’

A two-legged robot designed and built by Agility Robotics, Digit is lightweight and capable of handling packages up to 18kg. It can, apparently, climb stairs, traverse uneven terrain and react to being bumped without losing its balance.

Designed to fold up and be tucked neatly into an autonomous delivery vehicle, Digit can rely on the advanced technology within the vehicle for help in doing its job. While it does have Lidar and cameras and therefore enough sensor power to navigate basic hurdles, it can send information back to the vehicle which can then configure a solution.
